I lived in Jordan and it was a favorite dish. I cheated and let local friends make it. A colleague of my husband, however, perfected it and now cooks it in Boston. I also have been following Anissa and used to consult her about local foods when I lived in Jordan. I have a lot of her cookbooks and plan to get this one.
The mujaddarah was warm. They created a sandwich by filling a large pocket pita, finishing it with a splash of harissa. It's been more than a decade since I've been there, but I can still remember the aroma and each delectable bite.
In the subcontinent, khichri is often the go-to remedy for an upset stomach. It contains cumin and turmeric, both known for their anti-inflammatory properties, and is typically eaten with raita, often made with yoghurt and cucumber. Yoghurt, of course, is well known for its gut-soothing benefits.
Khichri is also comfort food. My husband always wants to eat khichri after returning from his travels. It is simple, nourishing, and uncomplicated.
Some versions of khichri include a generous serving of ghee on top! Rich and comforting, though perhaps not quite as healing.
Mojaddarah, by contrast, is robust, hearty, and stands confidently on its own. It certainly ticks the comfort food box for me.
Anissa’s version using bulgur wheat sounds delightful, and I cannot wait to cook it!
A favorite dish in my Lebanese household!! I love seeing Lebanese chefs and dishes spotlighted, thank you for sharing her recipe! Excited to check out Anissa's cookbook!! <3

For years I worked at an office close to Kalustyan's on Lexington Avenue and 28th Street in NYC. Their mujaddarah was memorable.

Love this. It’s called Khichri in India and Pakistan!

Just onions and salt. No spices? Looks amazing. Will try it this weekend.
As a lebanese American I learned so much here! Thank you! Love!
One of the best side dishes ! X thanks for sharing.
